Youth Curfew in D.C
In 1995, DC enacted a youth curfew starting at 11 p.m. The curfew expired on April 15th, 2026, and Muriel Bowser used her emergency powers to reenact it for a short time more. However, it is a hot topic among DC and the mayoral election. The Chief of Police can also enact ‘extended curfew zones’ meaning that in a specific area, the curfew starts at 8:00. I have conflicted feelings about the curfew. On the one hand, I can see how it could prevent violence, especially after wh

McDuffie vs. George for D.C Mayor
This year, DC is holding its first mayoral election without Muriel Bowser in quite some time. She announced she would not be running for reelection, and as of now, there are 2 main candidates, Kenyan McDuffie and Janeese Lewis George. In this post, I was going to cover my views on the curfew, but I think I will tackle that next week. Instead, I am going to go over the candidates' views on the big issues (housing, childcare, public safety) and my take on their takes. Note that

GOP Senators Stand Up To Trump
What Happened: Last week, Republicans in the Senate took a stand against Trump’s proposed 1.8 billion dollar ‘anti weaponization’ fund. The bill was originally just to fund ICE and border patrol, but after passing the House, the administration added a 1.8-billion-dollar fund. Republican senators broke from their party and voted against it going through. The fund was for the DOJ to compensate people who were allegedly prosecuted by the DOJ because of political bias during the

DOJ Sues Colorado Over Gun Control Law
Intro: Just a bit of background as to why I chose this particular piece of news. This past week, a teen at my local high school was shot to death on my path to school. He was a senior and set to graduate in a month. It just makes me really sad to see a government that is actively cracking down on states trying to prevent tragedies like this. What Happened? On May 6, the Department of Justice filed a complaint against Colorado over their long-standing gun control policy. In

The Hantavirus Outbreak
What Happened: The cruise ship MV Hondius has had an outbreak of hantavirus. Hantaviruses, as stated by the European Centre for Disease Control, “are a group of viruses that people usually catch through particles from infected rodents. It can cause serious illness, and the symptoms depend on the type of hantavirus involved.” Hantavirus is fairly rare, though most certainly not unheard of. What makes it in the headlines this time is that, most of the time, hantavirus goes from

The Conflict Over the Strait of Hormuz
What happened So, I already did a post on the US’s attacks on Iran, but I feel like we need a recap. The US bombed Iran for the purpose of taking out their nuclear program. Was there no legal excuse for this? No. Was there any immediate threat from Iran? No. So, consequently, Iran used it’s one piece of leverage. The Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil goes through. This spiked gas prices all over the world, especially in the US, and lowered Trump’s approv

The Appalling Article We Read
This blog post is going to be a bit different than my normal one, because its going to be about my own experience with an article our ELA class was given to read. It just really set me off because of its clear unreliability and misuse of facts. The fact that it was used as a part of the curriculum still astounds me. I am also going to use this as a place to rant because when I sent a letter to my teacher and principal I had to be all nice. So yeah, enjoy. What Happened? On

Markwayne Appointment to DHS
What happened: On March 18 th , Markwayne Mullin was appointed to be the Secretary of Homeland Security. He was confirmed by the Senate in a 54-45 vote. This comes after the firing of Kristi Noem over a controversial advertisement that was aired. Mullin has said he believes in restructuring the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), not scrapping in entirely, and stated he believed that officers needed warrants to enter houses unless they were already pursuing someone.

The Harms of DOGE's Cuts to the NWS
What happened: In May of 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency laid off 550 National Weather Service employees, many of whom were specialists in their field, such as hydrologists and meteorologists. Considering the fact that the NWS had about 4000, this left them severely understaffed and was, unsurprisingly, a massive blow to them, their productivity and their ability to keep people safe. And this is not taking into account that about 40% of national weather service

US Calls Anthropic a 'Supply Chain Risk'
What happened? Anthropic, one of the major AI companies and responsible for the creation of Claude, is suing the US government. They are doing this because the Pentagon labelled them as a ‘supply chain risk’. This prevents them from doing any sort of business with any branch of the US government. Anthropic has promised to fight it in court and is keeping that promise. Anthropic has already made cases in 2 different courts, but there have been no results unsurprisingly (courts
