Markwayne Appointment to DHS

What happened:

On March 18th, Markwayne Mullin was appointed to be the Secretary of Homeland Security. He was confirmed by the Senate in a 54-45 vote. This comes after the firing of Kristi Noem over a controversial advertisement that was aired. Mullin has said he believes in restructuring the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), not scrapping in entirely, and stated he believed that officers needed warrants to enter houses unless they were already pursuing someone. Although many democrats voted against him as he is widely considered MAGA and was appointed by Trump, many hope, myself included, that Mullin can provide a more reasonable stance and will not be bullied into submission by Trump.

My Take:

So, I would say that this is probably as good an outcome as possible. From what I’ve read, Mullin seems to be reasonable. I would prefer a democrat, but that was off the table because, well, it’s Trump. However, Mullin has supported reforms on ICE power and seems to be willing to engage in bipartisan behavior, something the world desperately needs. So, in conclusion, Mullin is certainly not perfect, but there are some pluses which is more than I can say for the rest of the Trump administration.
